According to a report, the Buffalo Bills are hiring the first full-time female assistant coach in NFL history.

History is continuing to be made in the NFL with the hiring of female coaches. The Arizona Cardinals made history this season when they hired Dr. Jen Welter to be a special assistant during training camp. Her time with the Cardinals garnered rave reviews from players and coaches alike for her knowledge of the game and now it’s setting into motion progress into getting more females involved with the game.

The Buffalo Bills are now joining on with history, as according to a report from Mike Florio they will be hiring the first full-time female assistant in NFL history.

"Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Bills have hired Kathryn Smith to serve as a special teams quality control coach. She becomes the first full-time female assistant coach in NFL history."

After the success of Welter, it’s no surprise to see a team take the next step and hire on a full-time female assistant. It’s a great move by Rex Ryan and the Bills, as they are ambassadors of the leagues and are opening doors to more history.

Smith will work on the special teams side of things, so it will be interesting to see the impact that she will have with the Bills and their special teams department.

More importantly, it’s not about gender. The Bills genuinely feel that she can be a great asset to the team and it also just happens to make the right kind of history in the NFL.

In an update to this story, the Bills have now officially announced the hiring.

Again, great move by Ryan and the Bills organization here.
