Results and highlights from Triple H winning the 2016 WWE Royal Rumble

The 2016 WWE Royal Rumble was historic right from the get-go with Roman Reigns putting his WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the line in the Royal Rumble, the first time a champ has ever defended in the match. With all of the uproar about potential surprises, though, the excitement coming into Sunday night’s main event was even greater.

Roman was in at No. 1 as previously announced and Rusev was No. 2 with the two duking it out early until Reigns sent him flying over the top rope before No. 3 came out. No. 3 made quite a splash, though, as it was the long awaited debut of AJ Styles:

Styles and Reigns battled for a second, including a nasty Pele Kick from Styles:

Next out was Tyler Breeze at No. 4, who was quickly dispatched, the same of which can be said for No. 5 in Curtis Axel, who was Styles’ first elimination:

Styles and Reigns still in the ring, out came Chris Jericho who tried to take on both men already in the ring, followed soon by Kane, Goldust, and Ryback. All these men were left in the ring brawling with one another. Kofi Kingston then came out (accompanied by the rest of New Day), but that’s when Ryback sent Styles a mile in the air over his head:

Then came Titus O’Neil at No. 11 and Goldust was eliminated. R-Truth was out next for a fantastic comedy spot where he thought it was a ladder match for the title and not the Rumble:

He was promptly eliminated and then we got the Kofi-not-being-eliminated spot as New Day caught him when he was thrown out:

Luke Harper then came out. In the meantime, Roman was sent to the outside, but not eliminated as the League of Nations beat him down, including being put through the Spanish announce table by Rusev:

Reigns was stretchered and then walked out of the arena. Kofi was actually eliminated during that time and then Big Show came out. He eliminated Titus before Neville came out, followed by another behemoth in Braun Strowman who immediately made an impact, eliminating Kane and Big Show. Kevin Owens was out at No. 18, limping to the ring, but he got it together in the ring as he took out Styles after the two battled briefly:

Owens’ opponent from earlier in the night in Dean Ambrose came next, but then came another surprise in Sami Zayn. Zayn and Owens immediately went at it with Sami getting the upper hand and eliminating KO:

The third member of The Wyatt Family in Erick Rowan came next, him and Harper then eliminating Stardust and Neville. No. 22 brought Mark Henry to the ring, but he didn’t last long as the Wyatts sent him packing. The trio of big Wyatts then sent Zayn packing before No. 23 arrived: The Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar.

Lesnar just wrecked everyone with suplexes, eliminating Rowan and then hitting an F-5 on No. 24 Jack Swagger before eliminating him:

The Miz was out next, but he went to commentary rather than entering right away. Del Rio was then after Miz while Lesnar eliminated Harper and Strowman all by himself. However, Bray was out next and the Wyatts all returned to the ring to jump Brock and take him out, but Brock took all of them out to leave us with a faceoff between him and Bray.

After a suplex to Bray, Lesnar tried to go for the F-5, but Harper returned to hit a superkick. After a Sister Abigail, the Wyatts flipped Brock over the rope and Bray remained:

Out next was Dolph Ziggler, who came in hot. It was Sheamus up next at No. 29, but then came Reigns as the Celtic Warriors was on the ramp. Roman hit him with a Superman Punch and the came back into the ring to eliminate Del Rio. But then came the bad news for Roman at No. 30 with Triple H:

Reigns and the COO had an intense standoff that couldn’t be interrupted before finally coming to blows. Everyone left then got in on the action with Hunter eliminating Ziggler. Bray was next to be eliminated after he tried to cross Triple H. Roman then tried to take out both Sheamus and HHH, but to no avail. Jericho was next to be taken out, followed by Sheamus getting tossed. Then came the shocker as Reigns was got off guard as HHH tossed him over the rope:

This left Triple H and Ambrose and the two fought hard, but the COO ultimately got the upper hand and took out the Lunatic Fringe:

That’s right, Triple H is the Royal Rumble winner and the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
