According to a report, the 76ers plan on offering Dennis Schroder a max contract during the 2017 free agency period.

The Philadelphia 76ers and Atlanta Hawks are two organizations that have plenty of big questions in front of them going forward. The 76ers have a ton of assets and are ready to start cashing in and building their roster, while the Hawks have questions about retaining some of the players on their roster and whether or not it’s time to go in a different direction. It turns out that the two sides almost made a deal with each other at the NBA Trade Deadline on February 18.

According to Keith Pompey of philly.com, the 76ers offered the Hawks a package for blossoming young point guard Dennis Schroder. The deal reportedly would have sent Ish Smith, Nik Stauskas and a 2016 first-round pick to the Hawks in return for Schroder. While the Hawks reportedly turned it down, it’s an enticing package and Pompey notes that the two sides could also reconvene on talks at the NBA Draft.

Pompey does go onto to note something interesting. He mentions that the 76ers are prepared to offer Schroder a max contract during the free agency period in 2017. That means that the Hawks are going to have to pay up to keep their young point guard.

The Hawks see Schroder as their point guard of the future and they have already been trying to move Jeff Teague to open up room for Schroder to take over as the team’s floor general. The Hawks currently have to decide whether or not they want to pay Al Horford max money in free agency this year and what to do with Teague and other role players on the team.

Now it appears that teams are already gunning for the guy that the Hawks see as their future at point guard. One thing is for sure, if the Hawks want to make Schroder the guy in Atlanta for many years to come, they’re going to have to pay him as a top superstar. The 76ers apparently are already prepared to do so.
