Which team will sign Alex Mack in 2016 NFL free agency?

On March 2, center Alex Mack voided the final three seasons of his contract with the Cleveland Browns to become a free agent. Mack is 30 years old and one of the best centers in the National Football League, showcasing his talents for years on a lousy team. Now, Mack has a chance to go to a contender.

Contract comparison

Mack is going to get paid, but don’t expect him to set any records. The seven-year starter for Cleveland has some mileage on him and at some point, might need to move to guard. Mack was on a five-year, $42 million contract before voiding his current deal, putting him in position to get a longer pact.

Jason Kelce is a nice comparison, having signed a six-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles for $37.5 million. Mack won’t get that length, but the AAV is on point.

Estimate: 5 years/$30 million/$18 million guaranteed

Will he stay?

Why would Mack want to stay? Yes, the Browns have a ton of cap space and can offer him a major contract, but so can another dozen teams. At this point, Mack is getting older and must want to win a championship at some point. That won’t be happening with Cleveland anytime soon.

If he goes…

Look for a very robust market. Mack would likely be getting plenty of play from a couple of NFC teams in the Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants. Both teams have all kinds of money to spend in free agency and need to upgrade along the offensive line. Another option could be the San Diego Chargers, a franchise that has all sorts of issues up front.
