Vince McMahon gave fans a rare peak behind the scenes as to how he keeps big surprise returns like Shane McMahon’s a secret

One of the biggest moments in the past few months in WWE was the surprise return of Shane McMahon to the company on WWE RAW three weeks ago. Not only had Shane O Mac not been seen on WWE television in six years, but there was also the fact that almost no one saw it coming in virtually any capacity. There were people around the Internet saying to watch RAW for a big surprise, but the fact that it was Shane was kept hush.

In the age of the Internet where rumors are circulating like crazy virtually all the time about WWE and professional wrestling as a whole, a surprise of that magnitude is incredibly difficult to keep a secret. However, the almighty overseer of WWE in Vince McMahon pulled back the curtain a bit on the company in an interview on Tuesday in which he explained how WWE was able to keep surprises like Shane’s return a secret.

Talking with the Orlando Sentinel after the official announcement that WrestleMania 33 will be taking place at the Citrus Bowl in 2017, Vince said that they way they handled Shane McMahon’s return and other surprises of that nature secret was simply by not telling anyone. In the case of Shane, he was kept on a bus in the parking lot until minutes before he was supposed to walk through the curtain and onto the stage. None of the wrestlers, much of the crew, and virtually everybody in the company is kept in the dark until that moment.

While that may seem a bit extreme, Vince also spoke on how that’s really the only effective way to surprise fans in this day and age because of how frequently things get leaked to various outlets around the Internet, be it social media or the “dirtsheets.”

There’s nothing better than a surprise in professional wrestling, especially a major one like the return of Shane to the company. So even if they have to go to pretty severe measures to keep things a secret in the modern era in WWE, fans ultimately are the ones who benefit from it.

And let’s hope there’s still a surprise or two waiting with WrestleMania 32 just around the corner.
