The Jets selected Christian Hackenberg in Round 2 of the 2016 NFL Draft and Twitter went a bit bananas

If there’s one thing that you can seemingly always count on at the NFL Draft, it feels like it’s the New York Jets doing something head-scratching in the first two rounds. So when they made a smart pick in the first round on Thursday with Darron Lee, everyone should’ve seen the wild pick coming in Round 2. Sure enough, the Jets swung for the fences with the No. 51 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, selecting quarterback Christian Hackenberg out of Penn State.

In terms of physical tools as a quarterback, Hackenberg has it all. However, he showed little improvement from his freshman year in college to his final season, has major technique and mental setbacks at the position, and is a huge risk for any NFL team to be taking.

What makes it all the more curious for the Jets is the fact that they could likely use a quarterback that could start right away given their ongoing negotiations with Ryan Fitzpatrcik. As such, taking a player with a clear need for development like Hackenberg certainly stirred the pot among NFL fans and Jets fans alike.

Here’s a look at what Twitter had to say about the Jets taking Christian Hackenberg in the second round:

Is there something funny about the Jets taking a quarterback that has major accuracy problems and needs to sit and develop when they likely need a starter right now? Is that something they’ve done before?

If nothing else, it’ll be fascinating to see how this plays out for the rest of the offseason and in the 2016 season with the Jets and Hackenberg.
