MLB Rumors: Jose Reyes Suspension This Week?

Will MLB come down with a punishment for Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes this week?
It’s been six months since Jose Reyes was arrested for throwing his wife through a glass door at the Four Seasons in Maui. Since then, there hasn’t been any resolution on how long the Rockies shortstop would be suspended for. We’ve seen no punishment for Yasiel Puig and a 30 game suspension for Arolids Chapman, but crickets on Reyes.
Now we may have a resolution.
According to the Denver Post, MLB is likely to announce this week how long the suspension is for. Reyes has been on paid administrative leave.
Reyes came to the Rockies in the Troy Tulowitzki blockbuster deal last summer. He is the team’s highest paid player. Per Cot’s Contracts, Reyes will make $22 million this year and next year and has a club option or a $4 million buyout for 2018.
The Rockies have been just fine without him. Prospect Trevor Story won the shortstop job in Spring Training and set the rookie record for homers during April with 10.
The prosecution in the Reyes case dropped the charges after Reyes’ wife refused to testify. Reyes has been working out away from the club, but even after his suspension, he would need a few weeks to get ready since he hasn’t played in a game setting since the end of last season.
The Rockies don’t even have a spot for Reyes at this point with how well Story has been playing, and there would be no reason to carry a $22 million backup. My guess is that once his suspension is lifted that they work out a buyout and let Reyes become a free agent and see if a team wants to take a flyer on him.
