The Mets will be without star third baseman David Wright for the next four to six weeks due to a herniated disc in his neck.

New York Mets third baseman David Wright has had a hard time staying healthy lately. He is still battling spinal stenosis in his lower back, which caused him to miss four months during the 2015 season. The Mets will be without their third baseman for the next four to six weeks due to a herniated disc that is unrelated to his spinal stenosis.

"“Certainly being the captain and the face of this organization, a manager’s worst nightmare is to see a star start to fade,” said Mets manager Terry Collins, via ESPN. “I think David’s got a lot of baseball left in him because of the way he prepares and the way he gets himself ready. But it’s hard to watch what he’s going through.”"

The Mets certainly have options as far as how they can replace Wright. For the time being, they have been using Wilmer Flores at third base. However, replacing Wright’s .788 OPS in the lineup could be very difficult.

One option that the Mets might not want to do because of the long-term ramifications but would certainly help them short-term is moving second baseman Neil Walker to third base. That would allow prospect Dilson Herrera to the roster and allow Herrera to play his natural position at second base. The Mets have been very loathe to rush Herrera, but they might be forced to make a move to replace Wright.

New York will have to hold the fort without their captain, with the Washington Nationals already three games up in the National League East.
