Mike Vick will soon be 36 years old, but the quarterback isn’t ready to step away from football just yet. After a season as the backup quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, which saw Vick lead the Steelers to a win on the road over the San Diego Chargers on Monday Night Football.
While Vick saw more playing time than expected with the Steelers before he got hurt, he proved that he can still be a serviceable backup quarterback in this league. Speaking at the Ron Jaworski Celebrity Golf Challenge via Jordan Ranaan of NJ.com, Vick admitted that he isn’t ready to step away from football and wants to keep playing next season.
"“I haven’t officially retired,” Vick said on Monday at the Ron Jaworksi Celebrity Golf Challenge at Blue Heron Pines Golf Club. “As of right now, it’s pretty much at a stalemate type of thing. Just taking the days as it comes, but most importantly for me, I just have to continue to work out and train. I would love to play this year, suit up for another run at it. I still feel like I could play and there is a lot left in the tank.”"
While Vick doesn’t have an offer yet, some team could be in the need of a backup as training camp rolls around and possibly if a quarterback goes down with an injury.
With plenty of experience in the league, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some team give him a look as well for competition for a spot on a roster either.
He might be getting up there in age and his best days are behind him, but Vick has proven that he can still step in when called upon and take the field. Whether or not his play continues to diminish remains to be seen.
