Catch a Lyft in a Ghostbusters wagon Friday and Saturday
Forget the Prius, get your ghost on this weekend with a ride, via Lyft, in the Ghostbusters wagon, the Ecto-1. Hit Ghost Mode in the Lyft app and go on a trip, not just a ride.
The marketing push for the new Ghostbusters becomes tangible July 1 and 2 when Lyft passengers can catch a ride in an Ecto-1, the iconic transport featured in both the original and new films. In New York City, Boston, Washington D.C., San Francisco and Los Angeles Lyft riders can request a car on the Lyft app’s Ghost Mode and get a free ride in the Ecto-1 and a chance to win tickets to the Ghostbusters’ premiere in Los Angeles. Ghostbusters opens July 15.
The Ecto-1 fleet is made up of originals from the films and replicas. The first Ecto from the 1984 Ghostbusters was a converted 1959 Cadillac ambulance. The 2016 Ghostbusters reprise uses a 1980 Cadillac Fleetwood hearse in similar livery to the original. A squad of Toyota Highlanders decked out in custom Ecto-1 wraps will cover for the originals and replica’s when demand exceeds the inventory of Cadillacs.
As if the decked out ride isn’t enough, Lyft is promising refreshments. Hi-C brands the Ecto Cooler and the Twinkies will, of course, be Ghostbuster-themed.
The Hollywood Reporter describes the Ghostbusters-Lyft partnership as a deepening codependency between Hollywood and the automotive industry,
"Tentpoles (big budget movies with high earnings) are increasingly leveraging the street-level marketing made possible by partnering with car companies and social media (the inevitable hashtag for the Lyft’s Ghostbusters promotion: #LyftGhostMode)."
