The NHL has officially set their dates for arbitration with 24 restricted free agents electing to go to arbitration.

Arbitration is the last resort between NHL restricted free agents and their respective teams. 24 players have elected arbitration while one team has elected to go to arbitration. The league has announced its court dates, courtesy of NHLPA.

Here are some quick notes about the arbitration process. Cases will be held from July 20 to August 6. Most cases will be settled before the case begins. Some cases will even be settled after the case is heard. The third party arbitrator listens to arguments from both sides. Both sides cite comparable contracts. After a 48 hour period, the arbitrator gives the ruling for the player’s salary and whether it will be for one year or two years. Teams are allowed to walk away from the ruling if it is more than $3.5 million a year.

During the process, players will often ask for a lot more than what they are actually worth. Think of it like selling a house. The seller naturally wants to make more money, so the seller often starts high. Meanwhile, the buyer (the team) wants to spend as little money as possible. Rarely is the house sold for the seller’s first listed price or the buyer’s first offer. The final price is more often than not somewhere in between the two extremes.

Here is the full list of each arbitration case and its date.
