MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees interested in Kyle Schwarber

According to MLB trade rumors, the New York Yankees might be interested in acquiring Kyle Schwarber from the Cubs.

The New York Yankees have been involved in MLB trade deadline talks almost exclusively because they’re considered major sellers. They’re sitting in fourth place in the AL East and about 8.5 games out of first place as of Monday night.

An aging team like the Yankees has to begin building for the future, and fast. It could do so by dealing veteran pieces such as Carlos Beltran, Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller while their value is at its highest.

Ridding out Beltran would make the outfield a little more suspect, but he’s nearing the age of 40 and they could get a couple pieces for the minor league system for him as a one-year rental to a World Series contender.

Just because Beltran might be gone by the trade deadline doesn’t mean the Yankees couldn’t add a major piece for the future that’d be able to contribute instantly, when healthy.

According to MLB columnist Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, the Yankees are rumored to have interest in Cubs’ outfielder Kyle Schwarber who is out for the season with a torn ACL which he suffered in the first week of the year.

Apparently general manager Brian Cashman thinks very highly of Schwarber and Passan was told by a source: “Cash thinks he can hit 50 home runs there.”

Obviously ‘there’ means Yankee Stadium in which the short porch in right field serves left-handed hitters well. The Cubs could use some relief pitching down the stretch and this trade would make sense for the short-term, but they might not want to give up a major piece for the future.
