Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley officially announced the new title for WWE RAW, the WWE Universal Championship

Coming out of the WWE Draft and then especially after WWE Battleground, there were still big questions about the brand split on both ends. However, perhaps the biggest question was what the company planned to do on WWE RAW without a heavyweight championship. With Smackdown superstar Dean Ambrose retaining at Battleground, WWE RAW was left without one only furthering the questions and speculation about the potential world title.

However, Stephanie McMahon and Mick Foley had the answer right at the start of the first episode of WWE RAW in the new era.

As they were out in the ring to kick off the new era, Stephanie and Foley announced the creation of a new top title for WWE RAW, a belt that will be called the WWE Universal Championship:

"There WILL be a new Championship title created for the #NewEra of @WWE #RAW! https://t.co/Y8MgcYA8yo— WWE (@WWE) July 26, 2016"

Foley and Steph also added that they would be holding a pair of Fatal Four-Way matches at WWE RAW with the winners facing one another later on. The winner would then face Seth Rollins for the WWE Universal Championship at SummerSlam.

The five competitors selected were Rusev, Kevin Owens, Cesaro, Sami Zayn, Chris Jericho, Sheamus, Roman Reigns, and Finn Balor.

Obviously everything will depend on how they book this tournament and how they bill the WWE Universal Championship, but this is definitely a bold move that could either pay off or fall flat with little in between.
