The Milwaukee Brewers and Cleveland Indians have reached an agreement to send Jonathan Lucroy to the Indians, Ken Rosenthal is reporting. The medicals still need to go through and Lucroy has to waive a no-trade clause but the deal is in place.
For the first place Indians, this is a major upgrade that will increase their chances of a World Series. To say that their biggest weakness on the team was the catcher is an understatement. This season the Indians catchers have combined to hit .161 with 10 home runs, 40 RBI, and a combined WAR of -1.3.

In Lucroy, they are getting one of the top catchers in the game. He is hitting .300 with 13 home runs, 50 RBI, and a WAR of 2.8. His glove is a good as his bat, and with his experience of seven years behind the plate, he should be able to adjust to the strong pitching staff in Cleveland.

For the Brewers, they are expected to land Fransisco Mejia, Yu-Cheng Chang and Greg Allen and a lower name prospect. Mejia is a catcher in A-ball who currently has a 40-game hit streak.  Chang, a shortstop, ranked as the Indians’ 12th best prospect and Allen, an outfielder, was 22nd in the Indians farm system.

While Lucroy was a core piece to the Brewers recent run of success, he has a club option next season before being a free agent. The Brewers are far from competing and would not get as much for Lucroy next year knowing he could potentially leave wherever he went after half of a season.
