Olympics fencing continues Tuesday with the men’s individual epee tournament.
Olympics fencing returned Monday for women’s individual sabres, where Team USA had a chance to get back into medal contention. Unfortunately, the Russian team proved to be too much for the other nations, and the gold medal bout featured a pair of Russians. Russia held three out of the eight spots in the quarterfinals. Team USA’s Mariel Zagunis was defeated in the Round of 16 by Yekaterina Dyachenko of Russia, 15-12, who ended up making it to the quarterfinals.
Sunday brought action from the men’s individual foil fencing tournament. American Gerek Meinhardt was knocked out early on in the Round of 32, leaving the #1 ranked Alexander Massialas in the hunt for a medal. The United States has not brought home a gold medal in fencing in over a hundred years, adding just a little pressure to the men’s team. Massialas fought hard in the gold medal bout against Italy’s Daniele Garozzo but lost in the end, 15-11.
