Recap of Olympics sailing on Tuesday, August 16th; Team USA’s Caleb Paine wins bronze in the men’s finn.
Olympics sailing continued on Tuesday, August 16th, with more preliminaries in the men’s and women’s 49er skiff, and the medal race in men’s finn dinghies and the mixed nacra 17 multihulls. Team USA’s Caleb Paine, a Point Loma High School alumni, won first place in the men’s finn race and took home the bronze medal, the first United States medal in sailing since 2008. Brazil took home two medals in today’s races.
On Monday, racing continued with the final preliminaries in the men’s and women’s 470 dinghies and men’s and women’s 49er skiffs. Monday’s medal race in women’s laser radial dinghies and men’s laser dinghies were postponed until Tuesday.
On Sunday, Team Netherlands had a very good day in the medal races in men’s and women’s RS: X windsurfers. On the men’s side, Dorian van Rijsselberghe came in first place for the Netherlands, followed by Ivan Pastor of Spain and Chun Leung Michael Cheng of Hong Kong, China. Van Rijsselberghe has been dominating the men’s RS: X preliminaries, and it’s no surprise that he’s the gold medalist. The medal race for the women’s RS: X windsurfers was a tight race between a group of women who all had strong showings in the preliminaries. Lilian de Geus of the Netherlands came in first, taking the gold medal, followed by Charline Picon of France with silver, and Chen Peina of China with bronze. Brazilian Patricia Freitas came in fourth place.
