Stephen Curry mouthguard sells for over $3,000 in auction

NBA superstar Stephen Curry’s game-used mouthguard was among the items that recently sold at an interesting auction.
One of the trademarks of two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry is his mouthguard. The Golden State Warriors superstar is often seen chewing on the protective gear with it half hanging out of his mouth. It also became famous during the NBA Finals when he threw it across the court and hit a Cleveland Cavaliers fan.
Recently, one of Curry’s signature mouthpieces sold at a quirky auction. Curry used the item during a Warriors road game. The mouthguard, which has Curry’s name on the guard and the case, fetched $3,190, according to ESPN.
SCP Auctions out of California handled the sale. Their vice president Dan Imler said a few months ago he expected it to sell for $5,000, at least. Still, over three grand for a piece of gear that hangs in someone’s mouth during games is quite a haul.
In addition, there were some other interesting items on sale in the auction. Among these items was a pair of autographed Converse shoes from Dr. J’s final game that took in over eight grand. Handwritten notes from Erving to reporter Peter Vecsey sold for over $10,000.
However, the item that took the prize for biggest sale was a Joe Jackson 1909 American Caramel card. That went for a cool $667,189.
Of note, the Curry mouthguard was not one he gave the auction company himself. This particular road game piece was discovered by a random fan who saw an opportunity and seized it.

Curry and the Warriors will begin their regular season at home with a big game on Oct. 25. They’ll take on the San Antonio Spurs starting at 7:30 p.m. local time. Curry should be on the court, chomping away at a new mouthguard as he tries to make it rain threes as only Curry can.
