Andrew Luck opted to buy himself a new flip phone after being awarded a $140 million contract by the Indianapolis Colts.

iPhone what? For Andrew Luck, the latest technology is no big deal. His latest contract of $140 million was a big deal, but instead of buying a house, sports car or the fanciest new smartphone he could find, he opted for a more practical choice.

According to ESPN, Luck decided to get a new flip phone from AT&T as his first “big” purchase. For all those people thinking Luck went with the simplest upgrade from his previous model, think again. A recent tweet indicates otherwise, as this particular phone includes a key feature.

Luck signed the six-year, $140 million deal in late July, making it the richest NFL contract ever. That will keep the Colts quarterback paid well through 2021 and gives him a shot at even more big money when he turns 32. It also allows for him to continue upgrading his phone to the latest flip model.

For those who are curious, the first-ever flip phone, called the StarTAC from Motorola, came out in 1996. That means it’s a technology that’s two decades old and arrived when Luck was age six. For Luck, it’s like it just came out in the past year or so.

Most flip phones then (and now) allowed for merely placing voice phone calls to other people or sending simple text messages. There was no video functions and the first Internet connectivity on these phones was basic. Snapchat wasn’t even a thing until recently and is probably not one on Luck’s device.

With so many athletes and celebrities getting involved in phone hack scandals or being reprimanded over social media posts, it seems Luck could be the smartest of them all. He’ll just need to be careful with that fancy new camera feature he has.
