With Tony Romo out with a broken bone in his back, here are five reasons that his backup Dak Prescott can lead the Dallas Cowboys to the NFC Playoffs.

The Dallas Cowboys will have to begin their 2016 NFL season without the face of the franchise, Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo. Head coach Jason Garrett informed the Dallas media on Saturday that Romo did break a bone in his back during the Cowboys’ preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night and the Dak Prescott era is underway.

Dallas lost Romo for most of 2015 to two different breaks in his collarbone. The Cowboys stunk without Romo under center, finishing 4-12 in 2015 with the worst record in the NFC, and the No. 4 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Though Romo now joins backup quarterback Kellen Moore on IR, the Cowboys have had good fortune with another quarterback this NFL preseason. The fourth-round pick out of Mississippi State University Dak Prescott has been mightily impressive in his three preseason games for Dallas.

Many have tabbed Prescott as the heir apparent to Romo in Dallas. While he does have the look and skill set of an NFL quarterback, he’s not a polished product at this point of his NFL career. Regardless of if he is ready, it is out of the frying pan and into the fire for rookie Prescott.

Prescott now has to be the presumed starter for Garrett’s Cowboys now that Romo is out indefinitely with a fracture in his back. Though he’ll have growing pains this fall, it may not be the end of the world to see Prescott take charge of the Cowboys offense. Here are five reasons Prescott can do the improbable and lead the Cowboys to the 2016 NFC Playoffs.
