Tyrone Swoopes eluded the Notre Dame defense for a six-yard touchdown run in double overtime to give Texas the huge upset victory

The Texas Longhorns shocked everyone simply by staying with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish early on. It was clear that, even with a true freshman starting at quarterback, this was a different Texas team than in recent years. However, one of the more impressive things was how Charlie Strong handled his quarterbacks. Said freshman in Shane Buechele was huge, but so too was senior running threat Tyrone Swoopes. With the stakes at their highest, it was the senior that pulled through.

After the Longhorns found themselves heading into overtime, they needed to recapture momentum. Both they and the Irish put up a touchdown and extra point in the first overtime. However, Texas held Notre Dame on the second drive, keeping them to only a field goal. Thus, a touchdown would win it from Texas. After Swoopes had already carried the team inside the 10-yard line with his feet, he had one more run left to offer. He dropped back and made a fantastic cut to avoid an unblocked rusher. Swoopes then burst through the middle and powered his way through before diving across the goal line, securing the huge upset for Texas:

That run in itself is impressive as hell. However, it goes deeper than that. For a senior to show the poise to not be the starter, but still deliver in the game’s biggest moment is incredible. Tyrone Swoopes may be behind Buechele in the depth chart, but this play proves the type of leader he is.

After this upset, Texas clearly deserves to be on the map. Strong seems to finally have his type of team on the field and it worked beautifully. It might not be traditional, but Swoopes and Buechele could be a big problem moving forward.
