The San Diego Chargers placed Keenan Allen on injured reserve due to an ACL injury. In a corresponding move, they activated Joey Bosa.

The San Diego Chargers’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs was a tough pill to swallow. Not only did they lose in overtime after leading 24-3, they also lost star receiver Keenan Allen. He got carted off the field in the second quarter, and it proved to be the turning point in the game. Up to that point, he had 63 yards on six catches.

According to Chargers beat writer Ricky Henne, Keenan Allen is now out for the season due to a torn ACL. But in a corresponding move, first-round draft pick Joey Bosa has been placed on the active roster.

Keenan Allen’s injury comes one season after he was limited to just eight games. The Chargers were a disaster that year, as they finished 4-12. Allen is a premier wide receiver, but his health problems are what hurt his draft stock, and are now hurting his NFL career.

Seeing him go down for the season after just the first game is absolutely heart-breaking. But at least the activation of Bosa provides some solace for Chargers fans. Despite being regarded as arguably the best defensive player coming into the 2016 Draft, Bosa missed practically all of training camp due to a holdout. He eventually signed a four-year deal, but he was held out of practice shortly thereafter.

Clearly, Bosa had some health issues at the start of the season, and missing training camp means he won’t be acclimated to the Chargers’ system. But there’s a reason why the Chargers were so intent on signing Bosa, and that’s because they need him. After seeing Keenan Allen go down so early in the season, the Chargers better hope that they’re not rushing out Bosa too soon.
