Dimitri Payet had a brilliant individual effort by dribbling past five defenders before scoring. It was a much needed goal for both him and West Ham.

West Ham United exceeded expectations last year when they earned a spot in the Europa League. The catalyst for their success was Dimitri Payet, who emerged as one of the best set piece specialists in the Premier League. All told, he finished with 12 goals and 14 assists, and was even up for PFA Player of the Year consideration.

But after fighting off interest from the likes of Real Madrid, it’s been a different story. Payet had only scored once in the League Cup, while West Ham have spiralled out of control. They currently sit 18th in the Premier League table, having won just one of their first six matches. Michail Antonio has been the lone bright spot so far, but West Ham need Payet to succeed.

After falling behind 1-0 to Middlesbrough, it seemed like they were headed towards another loss. But when they needed a moment of brilliance, Payet stepped up, and delivered this early candidate for goal of the year:

"So much determination by @dimpayet17 #WHU https://t.co/OrlIhhmMPV— NBC Sports Soccer (@NBCSportsSoccer) October 1, 2016"

There were literally five Middlesbrough players in the box, and he dribbled past them all! Payet even paid tribute to Steph Curry by breaking one of their ankles.

When Payet plays like this, it’s good not just for West Ham fans, but for all football fans. A goal like this is a clear indication that he has his confidence back. If they go on to win, he’ll be the reason why, but even if they draw, it’ll be the first points they’ve earned in a game since a win against Bournemouth.

West Ham might not get back to the Top 6 again after this start. But they’re too talented to play in the Championship, and with Payet playing like this again, he might just spark a winning streak for his team.
