Can Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett complete his Cinderella story and win the Heisman Trophy this year?

In 2014, J.T. Barrett finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy race. This year, Barrett is looking much more than someone looking for an invitation to New York City. He started off the season with the fourth-best odds to win the trophy, but it is starting to appear that his chances have increased with his marvelous start to the season.

Since the beginning of the season, Louisville’s Lamar Jackson was the popular choice as the front-runner to run away with the Heisman. Although Jackson is continuing to make defenses look silly, Barrett is easing his way into the conversation.

This Saturday against Rutgers, Barrett surpassed Bobby Hoying with the most passing touchdowns in Ohio State history. With Barrett having the top spot in the record books for the Buckeyes, his next accolade just may be the Heisman Trophy. With winning college football’s most prestigious award, it will be the 8th in the school’s history.

After having an inconsistent sophomore season, the redshirt quarterback from Wichita Falls, Texas has his swagger back as one of the best signal-callers in college football. Through four games, he is resembling the quarterback who conquered Big Ten defenses as a red shirt freshman with a record-breaking 45 touchdowns.

Unlike last season, his stats are becoming Heisman worthy. Through four games he has passed for 14-touchdowns, which is more than his total from last season. On the ground, he has three touchdowns, on top of having the highest quarterback rating and completion percentage in his career.

At the rate that he’s going, it’s safe to say that with offensive weapons at his disposal such as Curtis Samuel, Mike Weber Jr., Noah Brown, and much more, he will continue to climb up the Heisman rankings.

Despite the Buckeyes having remaining games against Wisconsin, Michigan State, and the Michigan Wolverines, it will not derail his chances in winning the hardware. Some will claim that he has yet to face the cream of the crop of the Big Ten, but if history tells us anything, he has shown the ability to perform at a high level when the stakes are high.

Urban Meyer knows a thing or two about Heisman-caliber quarterbacks, and it’s safe to say that Barrett is now in the conversation.

With being the face of arguably the best team in college football, on top of putting up video game-like stats, if Barrett takes the Heisman Trophy back to Columbus, it should not come as a surprise.
