The Detroit Pistons have announced that guard Reggie Jackson is going to be out six to eight weeks with a sprained thumb and knee tendinitis.

Stan Van Gundy and the Detroit Pistons have done an excellent job of assembling their roster. Acquiring Reggie Jackson helped lead a resurgence that ultimately returned the Pistons back to the playoffs this past season. If they’re going back this season, they will have to survive without Jackson for a while.

On Monday, the Pistons announced that Jackson will be out six to eight weeks with a sprained thumb and the knee tendinitis he has been dealing with. The knee is the more major of the two issues and until that is feeling good again, it could be a while before he takes the court.

The NBA regular season is a grueling stretch and the first six to eight weeks would likely put him out at least the first month or two of the season. It’s important to note that the Pistons signed veteran point guard Ish Smith in free agency. Smith is a solid veteran guard that has speed like Jackson and should be able to hold the fort down while he’s gone.

It’s better to sit him early and let him get the rest that his knee needs. If they rush him back too early, then there could be lingering issues that could ultimately affect the entire season. They’re in a precarious position right now and have to be very careful.
