A referee unintentionally hit Urban Meyer in the face, resulting in a sideline interference penalty against Ohio State while summing up their first quarter.

For as great as Ohio State have looked so far, they knew they faced a tough test in Wisconsin. The Badgers have one of the best front sevens in all of college football, and if one team wasn’t intimidated by the Buckeyes, it’s them.

They’ve already faced a murderers’ row of opponents in LSU, Michigan State, and Michigan, emerging 2-1 against them. And while their offense hasn’t been great, their defense has been outstanding. They are the only team to limit Michigan to under 45 points, and are controlling the game against Ohio State so far.

While the score was only 10-3, the first quarter was all Wisconsin. They have limited J.T. Barrett’s effectiveness through the air, and have pressured him all game long. They were lucky to only trail by a score, as it has been a frustrating game all around.

If anything has summed up Ohio State’s display so far, it was Urban Meyer getting hit by a referee … then having a penalty called against him:

Meyer was called for a sideline interference infraction, which sent Ohio State fans into a frenzy. He didn’t do anything, the referee’s action was unintentional, and somehow the Buckeyes get flagged. They deserve to be behind, but things like this don’t help their cause at all.

Michigan was off this week, but Jim Harbaugh is a guy who throws temper tantrums on the sideline for fun. But after seeing this happen to Meyer, he’ll likely exercise caution the rest of the way. If Ohio State loses to Wisconsin, then Michigan will control their own destiny, especially since they already beat the Badgers. But they still have to approach the season one game at a time.
