After blowing out the San Francisco 49ers, plenty of Buffalo Bills players spoke out about how they believe Colin Kaepernick is washed up.

Two weeks into the season, it looked like the sky was falling for the Buffalo Bills. They started 0-2 and fired their offensive coordinator Greg Roman. But since then, they’ve rattled off a four-game winning streak, the latest of which was an emphatic 45-16 blowout over the San Francisco 49ers.

That game was Colin Kaepernick’s first start of the season since he started protesting the national anthem. Bills Mafia wasn’t kind to him, as they showered him with boos on his opening drive and called him plenty of racist things during the tailgate.

Then after the game, several Bills defensive players spoke to Bleacher Report about Kaepernick’s performance. One anonymous player set the tone by calling him “done” and “terrible”, while others followed suit.

Cornerback Stephon Gilmore said “We wanted to do everything we could to make him throw the ball. I mean, he’s an athlete. You can’t take that from him. But when it comes to passing the ball, he can’t really throw. We took advantage of that. We wanted to make him beat us with his arm, and he couldn’t do that.”

Linebacker Zach Brown, who mocked Kaepernick’s celebration after sacking him, said “We knew he was going to be rusty. So we just had to bring the heat. Because at the end of the day, we had to make sure he pays. Get him moving and our players will get him. Our corners and DBs are better than their receivers.”

Preston Brown said Kaepernick is “definitely a guy your root for”, but that the Bills were coming up with ways to attack him.

Kaepernick is coming off of a bad season, and rust was going to be expected. But despite his poor passing, he finished 13-of-29, he didn’t turn the ball over, and his one touchdown pass came as a result of miscommunication from the Bills’ defensive backs. He was great on his feet as well, racking up 66 yards on eight carries.

In the end, the Bills’ DBs are better than San Francisco’s receivers, but there’s nothing he can do about that. And the Bills ultimately won because of their ground game, not because they shut down Kaepernick. To call him washed up after a performance like that is wrong, and it’s only going to motivate him to do better the rest of the way. But sitting at 1-5, it’s hard to imagine Kaepernick carrying the 49ers to the playoffs.
