NFL roundup: Rams are staying with Case Keenum as their starter

Sunday’s NFL action kicked off with the New York Giants beating the Los Angeles Rams in London, England. It ended with a historic tie.

The Los Angeles Rams won their season opener, and it looked like the move to Case Keenum was a good one. Since then, the team has sputtered offensively, and after scoring ten early points on Sunday, it did nothing from then on. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher stated after the game that they are staying with Keenum as their starter, despite the fact they have the first overall selection in last April’s draft waiting in the wings.

The San Diego Chargers have been known to blow games late this season, but they were on the other end of that on Sunday. The Bolts battled all the way back to tie the game at 30, forcing overtime, before winning it in the extra frame. It was a huge win against an Atlanta Falcons team that had been red-hot heading into Sunday. The Chargers are now 3-4 on the season.

The Geno Smith Era in New York lasted about 24 minutes, as the quarterback injured his knee during the second quarter of his first start of the season. After taking over for Ryan Fitzpatrick, who has been highly ineffective this season, Smith actually looked good, tossing a 69-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Enunwa. Fitzpatrick led the Jets to the victory in relief, and had some choice words to say about the Jets hierarchy after the game.

Fitz told reporters that he felt the Jets’ brass lost faith in him, and that includes head coach Todd Bowles. He explained that he plays better when he is pissed off, and that  he will play the rest of the season that way. Smith will have an MRI on Monday to reveal what is going on inside his knee, and Bowles said he was not sure yet if he would be ready for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

Speaking of the Cleveland Browns, they had to turn to their sixth quarterback of the season on Sunday, as Cody Kessler had to leave the game due to a concussion. Kevin Hogan, who was a star at Stanford during his four years there, stepped in and looked pretty good early against the Cincinnati Bengals. He had a beautiful run for a touchdown, but like most Browns quarterbacks do, he threw two interceptions in the loss.

Finally, on Sunday night, the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks played the lowest scoring overtime tie in the history of the NFL. The two teams combined for only 12 points, as missed field goals in overtime led to the tie. Stephen Hauschka and Arizona’s Chandler Catanzaro missed short field goal in overtime to win it, as the NFL once again put on a snoozefest in primetime. Thank God we get to watch the Jaguars and Titans play on Thursday Night Football, before seeing the red-hot Chicago Bears again in primetime on Monday Night Football in Week 8.
