New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning dropped back and hit a diving Dre Kirkpatrick for the interception.

In the game of football, field position is everything.

On 2nd-and-7, Eli Manning dropped back to pass just like he does every other down. The only problem was, the play didn’t go according to plan. With the game tied at seven apiece, Manning had probably planned on marching down the field and leading his team to some kind of a score.

Sitting on just over five minutes, he had all the time in the world to make that happen. Eli lined up in his shotgun formation and called for the ball. With a routine hike by the center he moved back into a quick three-step drop.

Eli looked for his man and gunned for what he thought was a willing receiver in Roger Lewis. Comfortable with his choice he threw for the sideline. Dre Kirkpatrick gave his opposition plenty of room and at the last second made a diving catch to haul in the interception.

The nightmare play could have ending there for the New York Giants, but surprisingly enough no one touched Kirkpatrick when he hit the ground. With blockers at his disposal, the Bengals’ cornerback took off for the end zone.

After some great blocking from his teammates he returned the ball to the seven-yard line. It was a classic case of veteran defender on rookie wide receiver.

The heads-up play by the defense earned Cincinnati’s offensive unit fantastic field position. After a three-and-out possession, the Bengals settled for a field goal. New York currently has a 14-10 lead at halftime.
