Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer was showered down with champagne by family and friends after winning the 2016 Cy Young award.

While the MLB season is over and free agency has arrived, awards season is still underway for 2016. One of the toughest awards to hand out each is season is the Cy Young award. With plenty of dominant pitchers in the MLB, it’s hard to choose a recipient for each league. Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer won the Cy Young in the National League, and it was his second Cy Young award overall of his career.

After winning his award, the family and friends of Scherzer decided to celebrate in style. As is custom in sports, Scherzer was showered in champagne and absolutely covered afterward from the raucous celebration of winning the esteemed award.

It’s one thing to win one Cy Young award in your career as everyone will remember you as having that fantastic year, but to win two puts you in a completely different category. To win multiple Cy Young awards signifies that Scherzer has been one of the best at his job in the league for an extended period of time.

He took a big bet on himself when he declined a contract extension from the Detroit Tigers and picked up an even bigger one from the Nationals. Needless to say, winning more Cy Youngs will help eventually land him another monster deal and more chances at bringing him more trophies. It’s not the big one that every player wants, but being recognized as the best in your league is always a nice moment.
