Romo had a passionate speech, noting Prescott’s amazing year and deserving the start. But Jerry Jones believes there is still more for Romo and the Cowboys.

Social media was in a flurry Wednesday commenting on Tony Romo’s statement to the media. For the often disparaged quarterback, players and media alike seemed to respect his honest and team first mentality. Owner Jerry Jones says the Cowboys are not ready to move on from Romo yet. So the question begs, what does Romo’s future look like in Dallas?

Jones had some very bold statements to the media today. The Cowboys owner commented, “I think Tony has got five years left of really competing for a Super Bowl. I believe Tony will be the quarterback on a Super Bowl team. I believe that strongly. We’re talking generic now, and I have no plans for him not to be part of the Dallas Cowboys. Not a consideration.”

Seriously? I think Romo can definitely still compete in the NFL after returning from this injury, but five more years? He would be 41 years old by then. A Super Bowl? I think his best opportunities have since passed.

I only see three potential futures for Romo.

The Dak Mentor

Remember Drew Bledsoe and his young backup Tom Brady? Dallas has all of the pieces to repeat that scenario. An improving defense. Talented running backs and wide receivers. Highly talented, young quarterback, with an experienced backup. Romo has the nature to help Dak understand the fine points of the league play and has to prefer staying in Dallas.

Trent Dilfer 2.0

A team with dominating defense, solid offensive line and need of a quarterback to manage games? Technically, Romo could fill this role and get to a Super Bowl that way. However, it would be against his nature. He is a risk taker, thus all the injuries. If he leaves Dallas, he simply cannot survive without a monster O-line.

A Late Season Dallas Savior

Let’s not forget how we got here: another Romo injury. The NFL is a brutal league, and star players go down nearly every week. Dak will take hits all year long, and at some point over the next two to three seasons Dallas will need someone to step in for a play or a month. Romo knowing the offense can be the Cowboys’ perfect safety net. And if the worst were to happen to Prescott in a NFC Championship game or Super Bowl, what a storybook ending that might prove for the winding road of Tony Romo.
