Texas boosters reportedly pushing hard to hire Tom Herman
Boosters are reportedly putting pressure on Texas Longhorns football to make Houston’s Tom Herman their next head coach.
It’s been a rollercoaster for Charlie Strong and the Texas Longhorns in the 2016 college football season. His seat has gone from hot to cold more than any other coach in the country. However, it seemed like it might’ve finally cooled off for good at the end of the year. All indications showed that Strong would keep his post if he could beat TCU and Kansas to end the year. Now that’s all changed. Boosters for Texas are now all-in on hiring Tom Herman from Houston.
According to a report from ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, the boosters at Texas are making a heavy push within the program to hire current Houston Cougars head coach Tom Herman. Obviously implied in this pressure is calling for Strong’s dismissal. As McMurphy notes, this is a change of tune as Strong’s job was considered at least in his own hands. Also from the report, the Houston upset of the Louisville Cardinals has brought about this stark deviation from the previous path.
Herman’s name has come up as a potential replacement in many prominent college football coaching jobs in recent years. And it’s not hard to see why that’s the case. Through just under two seasons at Houston, Herman has led the Cougars to a 22-3 overall record and a win in the Peach Bowl last season. What’s more, he has a pedigree as one of the best assistants in the country prior to that, working under Urban Meyer at Ohio State.

Obviously there’s no guarantee that the administration will listen to these booster regarding Strong and subsequently Herman. However, money talks and we all know the Texas boosters have plenty of it. If they’re pushing as hard as it seems, this could be almost a formality—should Herman accept.
