Oregon Ducks quarterback Justin Herbert hits wide receiver Darren Carrington for the game-winning touchdown against the No. 12 Utah Utes in Salt Lake City.

2016 has not been kind of Mark Helfrich’s Oregon Ducks. Oregon entered play in Week 12 on Saturday against the No. 12 Utah Utes with a miserable 3-7 record on the year. All the Ducks could do was play spoiler. They did just that.

Down 28-26 with seconds left at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Utah, Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert finds wide receiver Darren Carrington at the very back of the Utes end zone on a game-winning touchdown.

This win on the road in Salt Lake City is a nice consolation prize for the Ducks’ lost 2016 college football season. In a way, this game-winning touchdown pass from Herbert to Carrington redeems the early season loss to the Colorado Buffaloes in Eugene on a late fourth quarter touchdown pass.

Oregon has seriously shook up the Pac-12 South standings by stunning No. 12 Utah. It knocks the Utes out of the Pac-12 South race. Should the USC Trojans clobber their weakened crosstown rival, USC could win the division for the second consecutive season.

However, the Trojans need the Colorado Buffaloes to lose at home to the Washington State Cougars to ensure their place in the 2016 Pac-12 Championship in Santa Clara.

It came from a very unlikely source, but the Ducks were the ones that might have ultimately decided the other Pac-12 division. Oregon knocked Utah out of it, leaving the Pac-12 South to be determined by either the Buffaloes or the Trojans. USC has the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Buffaloes. That was Colorado’s only Pac-12 loss of the season entering play on Saturday.
