Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney waves off South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp before they were supposed to shake hands pre-game.

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney was apparently too busy getting his players fired up on Saturday night to play the arch rival South Carolina Gamecocks that he waved off new Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp’s gesture to shake hands pre-game.

The Tigers have already clinched another trip to the ACC Championship by winning the ACC Atlantic Division. Clemson will play the Virginia Tech Hokies in Orlando next weekend. South Carolina has achieved bowl eligibility by winning its sixth game last week against Western Carolina last Saturday.

This is Muschamp’s first year on the job in South Carolina. He was trying to do the right thing by literally meeting Swinney halfway at Memorial Stadium. Swinney didn’t greet Muschamp like he should have. He did however agree to shake Muschamp’s hand a few minutes later.

While Clemson is the better of the two South Carolina teams, it can’t be good karma for Swinney to not shake Muschamp’s hand initially. Clemson is one of a few teams left in the Power 5 that can play in the 2017 College Football Playoff. If Clemson beats South Carolina and Virginia Tech next weekend, the Tigers will get to another College Football Playoff.

South Carolina has already achieved the impossible by reaching bowl eligibility. The Gamecocks have nothing to lose in this rivalry game. They aren’t expected to win and would love nothing more than to sink Clemson’s National Championship aspirations. Does this waved-off initial handshake come back to bite Clemson at some point?
