The Los Angeles Rams have fired head coach Jeff Fisher.

Jeff Fisher has a tendency to stick around in places. Many feel the Tennessee Titans did themselves a disservice by keeping him around for too long, and even though the Los Angeles Rams hired Fisher in 2012, many fans feel the same way.

Well, following a blowout loss in Week 14 to the Atlanta Falcons, the Rams have fired him.

Shortly after the news, the team released a statement.

This comes just a day after Fisher tied the NFL record for most career losses with Dan Reeves. While it’s hard to believe someone will give him another chance, perhaps Fisher will get the chance to hold that dubious distinction one day. With him as their head coach, the Rams went 31-45 without having any winning seasons. However, Fisher did lead the team to three seven-win seasons, going 7-9 twice and 7-8-1 once.

It’s a bit baffling why it was done now, but firing Fisher should prove to be a wise decision for the Rams down the road. They need to move on and rebuild, and a younger head coach might be able to relate to the players better. One of the biggest criticisms of Fisher is he keeps making excuses. A change could benefit the team, as having a coach who holds them accountable would help them grow. Rebuilding the Rams will be a painful process, but at least they have their franchise quarterback (hopefully) in Jared Goff.

Fisher’s decisions were confusing, but none were more so than not starting the team’s first overall pick from day one; it took him forever to put Goff on the field. When Fisher did, it became painfully obvious he’s a better quarterback right now than Case Keenum, who received starts over him. With Fisher gone, the team should be able to move on from their struggles and undergo a much needed full rebuild.
