Cardinals at Seahawks: Highlights, score and recap
By John Buhler
The Arizona Cardinals stun the Seattle Seahawks 34-31 on a last-second field goal by kicker Chandler Catanzaro. Arizona improves to 6-8-1, while Seattle falls to 9-5-1 on the season.
What a finish to the Arizona Cardinals’ road game against the division rival Seattle Seahawks. The Cardinals were able to shock to Seahawks on a last-second field goal by kicker Chandler Catanzaro to win 34-31 as time expired. Here’s how the final minutes went down.
Seattle forced Arizona to punt down 31-25 near two minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks would drive and put together the game-tying score. Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson would connect on a touchdown pass to a wide-open Paul Richardson in the back of the Arizona end zone.
On the ensuing PAT, Seattle kicker Steven Hauschka would miss the extra point wide left. So the game remained tied at 31 points apiece. Arizona would have roughly a minute left to get in field goal range.
Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer did enough on a third and long to set up Catanzaro game-winning field goal. Arizona didn’t have any timeouts left and had to hurry the special teams unit to the line.
Catanzaro had missed the game-winning field goal in overtime of the Cardinals’ embarrassing tie to the Seahawks earlier in the season. He was perfect on this rushed 43-yard attempt. Arizona may be out of NFC playoff contention, but the Cards were winners on Christmas Eve.
With this loss, Seattle falls to 9-5-1 and loses control of its destiny to get a first-round bye in the NFC Playoffs. The Seahawks would be the No. 4 seed if the Atlanta Falcons and either the Detroit Lions or Green Bay Packers win out.
