It’s that time of year when NBA teams begin shamelessly shilling through their social media accounts to lock down All-Star votes for their players. It’s totally understandable, although we could probably do without 5:00 AM reminders from the Denver Nuggets to vote for Jameer Nelson.

In some cases teams go a little further and the players themselves get involved. Enter the Charlotte Hornets’ ridiculous parody of the 1990s TV Show “Walker, Texas Ranger.” Charlotte’s imitation features point guard Kemba Walker as Chuck Norris’ character, Walker, in an unlisted YouTube series that starts with a trailer including a theme song by Spencer Hawes.

The trailer gives you a nice taste of what’s to come. This isn’t just some one-off production from the Hornets, but rather a thrilling series that chronicles “bad guys” running off with Hugo, Charlotte’s mascot.

Would anyone actually be mad if we got hour long episodes of this stuff? Frank Kaminsky as an enthusiastic sidekick worried about Kemba’s ability to pass a box destroying basketball and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist of “MKG Security” as dispatcher are both deserving of Best Supporting Actor nominations. Add in the Game of Thrones knock-off bad guys and you’ve got yourself a true modern epic.

This got me thinking about what other 1990s TV shows teams could revive in their quest to bolster the All-Star credentials of their roster. A few humble suggestions:

  • The Los Angeles Clippers should go ahead a fire up an “Everybody Loves Raymond” remake staring backup point guard Raymond Felton;
  • I would pay good money to watch an animated series from the Chicago Bulls featuring Doug McDermott as Quailman and Jimmy Butler as the Silver Skeeter;
  • And finally, we can just go ahead and cue up the “Frasier” remake with Tim Frazier in which the New Orleans Pelicans’ guard takes calls on his radio show to act as a psychiatrist to the rest of the roster.

I’m all for bringing more creativity to All-Star campaigns. Kemba Walker throwing roundhouse kicks while wearing a cowboy hat is definitely one way to do that. Now, let’s greenlight some of these other shows so we can start our own NBA All-Star campaign award show.
