Dallas Cowboys pass rusher David Irving thinks his team needs another crack at the New York Giants in the 2016 NFC Playoffs. Be careful what you wish for.

The Dallas Cowboys are sitting pretty at 13-2 on the season and have already locked up home-field advantage in the 2016 NFC Playoffs. Dallas’ only two blemishes this year came to the NFC East rival New York Giants. Cowboys pass rusher David Irving really wants another shot at New York in the 2016 NFC Playoffs.

Irving told PFT Live on Friday that his team does need a third crack at the Giants. He said in an interview, “I think we need it. I’m looking forward to it, we all are. Whether we lose or not, that’s our greatest competition this year so far. I would love to get another crack at them…Third time’s a charm, right?”

Well, a meeting between these two division rivals is possible, but does Dallas really want to play a team that has owned them twice already? New York will be the No. 5 seed in the 2016 NFC Playoffs. The most likely chance for a third meeting between Dallas and New York would be in the NFC Divisional Round. Dallas has a first-round bye and would play the lower of these three advancing seeds: No. 4, No. 5, or No. 6.

New York will have to beat the No. 4, probably the NFC North Champion (Detroit or Green Bay) or maybe even Seattle on the road. Should the No. 6 seed (Detroit, Green Bay, or Washington) beat the No. 3 seed (Atlanta, Seattle, NFC North Champion), the Cowboys could meet the Giants again in the 2016 NFC Championship Game in Dallas if both rivals get past the divisional round.

Dallas has been easily the best team in the NFC this season. The Cowboys are the favorites to represent the NFC in Super Bowl 51 in Houston. However, a third loss to the Giants this season would make the 2016 Cowboys this decade’s version of the 1999 Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jacksonville went 14-2 in 1999, won the AFC Central, with its only two losses being to the division rival Tennessee Titans. These two rivals would meet in Jacksonville a third time for the right to play in Super Bowl XXXIV. Tennessee won and Jacksonville lost to the Titans for a third time in 1999. Tom Coughlin really couldn’t beat Jeff Fisher. Can Jason Garrett beat Ben McAdoo should they meet for a third time in 2016?
