The San Francisco 49ers have interviewed Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan for their head coaching position.

While the NFL Playoffs will begin this weekend and everyone will be waiting to see who moves on from the Wild Card Round to the Divisional Round, there is still plenty of other business going on. Teams that didn’t make the playoffs and are in need of a new head coach have been interviewing and lining up potential prospects. Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is one of those coaches that is  a candidate for multiple teams.

On Friday, Shanahan interviewed with the San Francisco 49ers, the team announced. After firing three coaches over the last few years, the 49ers have been a revolving door at the head coaching position. The team has been looking for someone that can be a steady influence in the locker room as they continue to rebuild the team.

Shanahan is an experienced coordinator and has helped produce an all-time offense in Atlanta this season. He has helped turn Matt Ryan into an MVP candidate and his offense has consistently gotten better each week of the season.

The 49ers have a lot of uncertainties facing them with their roster moving forward, especially at the quarterback position. Although Colin Kaepernick’s numbers weren’t bad under center for the team this season, it is not known yet if he will be back with the team next season.

However, landing a guy like Shanahan would be a major grab for the 49ers. As one of the top coordinators in the league, he has earned his chance to be a head coach. His father, Mike Shanahan, was the head coach for two Denver Broncos Super Bowls and the lineage is there for him.

The 49ers are still searching for a general manager as well in the process. One has to wonder if they will decide on hiring a decision maker before hiring a coach first. Having both be on the same page is necessary to success in the NFL.
