Things got out of hand at Stegeman Coliseum on between the Georgia Bulldogs and Missouri Tigers during this bench-clearing brawl between SEC rivals.

It was a sleepy, snowy Saturday afternoon in Athens when the Georgia Bulldogs (9-5) hosted their SEC rival Missouri Tigers (5-8) on the hardwood of Stegeman Coliseum. Missouri would take a 26-20 lead into halftime and things got really interesting.

As the buzzer sounded to signify the end of the first half, players on both teams started to shove each other. Then the coaching staffs on both teams started getting physical with each other. In a matter of seconds, we had a full-blown bench-clearing brawl between the Bulldogs and Tigers, fighting like cats and dogs.

What seemed to trigger the donnybrook was when a Missouri player pushed Georgia’s best player in power forward Yante Maten in the back after collecting the ball on a made basket. Maten is a star junior frontcourt player for Mark Fox in Athens but is often overlooked nationally by the program he plays for.

Maybe Missouri wanted to rub it in Georgia’s face being up six at halftime in their place? The Tigers have a proud basketball tradition but have had their issues with sanctions and a revolving door of coaches in the last several years. Fox has been in Athens since 2009.

The weird part about this brawl wasn’t that it was between Georgia and Missouri, but that the coaches seemed to get into more than the players did. For those in Athens that opted to venture to Stegeman Coliseum in the snow got more than an SEC basketball game as entertainment on Saturday afternoon. Expect the second half between these budding SEC rivals to be chippy as well.
