Julius Thomas reportedly traded to the Miami Dolphins

After some uncertainty surrounding the situation earlier in the day, Julius Thomas will be heading to the Miami Dolphins.

According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, Julius Thomas will be departing from the Jacksonville Jaguars and heading to the Miami Dolphins.

This deal will be completely separate from the Brandon Albert-Julius Thomas swap that was reportedly discussed earlier, and the Jaguars will receive a late-round 2017 draft pick according to the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero.

With this move, Thomas will be reunited with his former offensive coordinator, Adam Gase, who is now the head coach of the Dolphins.

It’s hard to see this move as mutually beneficial, as you could argue that most of the success that Thomas obtained was as a result of Peyton Manning in his record-breaking 2013-2014 campaigns, but this move gives Miami some much-needed depth.

Thomas does give the Dolphins a go-to target in the red zone as he can use his basketball background to get position on defenders and box them out, leaving windows open for Tannehill to hit. He is also a threat over the middle, which should open up a new dynamic in the Dolphins offense.

The Dolphins now will have to decide whether they want to pursue Dion Sims in free-agency. Sims really came on in the last part of the season, as he caught four touchdowns in the last six weeks of the season. He can stay in and block but is not as proficient running routes and could serve as a solid TE2.

In the end, the Dolphins filled a need for practically nothing. It is time for Thomas to go out there and prove that his time in Denver was no fluke and that he is capable of putting up big numbers regardless of who is throwing him the ball.
