Derrick Jones Jr. might have disappointed in the dunk contest but he’s still great in game

Derrick Jones Jr. was the darkhorse favorite for this year’s NBA dunk contest. His highlight reels coming out of the D-League were monstrous and had everybody excited for what he would be able to do in a contest setting. Sadly, his performance didn’t quite live up to the hype outside of a few good dunks. Still, he’s one of the NBA’s better dunkers and excitement is to be expected when he rises up to throw it down.

Tonight against the Chicago Bulls, Jones Jr. showed everybody why he had so much hype coming into the NBA. Given a fastbreak opportunity with nobody in front of him, Jones Jr. took the ball to the other end of the floor and rose for a monstrous dunk. While it’s hard to see on video, according the announcers, even Dwyane Wade was impressed with Jones Jr’s throwdown.

That’s not a freethrow line dunk, but it may as well be considering the angle Jones Jr. is coming at the rim from. Then he cocks it back to make sure all of his power is released on the slam, and he almost finishes it while looking at the rim. Those are some serious hops for a dude that most people had never heard of until the dunk contest came around.

It’s a shame Jones Jr. had so much hype entering this year’s dunk contest. Had he come in as more of an unknown there might have not been such a high level of expectation for him to dominate the contest. He still put on a show, but it wasn’t the highlight reels so therefore it wasn’t as good. Don’t let the dunk contest disappointment fool you. This man can fly can with the best of them and is probably one of the best in game dunkers out there.
