A Tampa Bay Lighting fan savagely roasted a referee during a video review by offering him his glasses.

Nobody likes video reviews in the NHL. For one thing, nobody really knows what offsides is anymore. It’s almost like a catch in the NFL. The rulings have been inconsistent at best and terrible at worst. Goaltending interference is another grey area. Fans are fed up with it. One Tampa Bay Lightning fan thought of a creative way to express his disdain. During a challenge for offsides, he offered a referee his glasses.

That’s some savage trolling there. Sadly, it didn’t appear to work, as the referees overturned a potential goal by the Lightning, ruling it offsides. Maybe the referee could have used those glasses after all?

Understandably, fans have to be frustrated with the rules regarding challenges. First of all, only a select few events can be challenged to begin with. Offsides, goaltender interference (and lack there of), and goals are the only things that can be reviewed. Teams only get one challenge per game, so why not expand what can be challenged?

Secondly, the rulings aren’t consistent. What’s goaltender interference one night seems to be ruled the other way the next. To be fair, the rules are grey, which makes it very hard on referees. However, that’s on those who write the rules. There needs to be a lot more clarification for goaltender interference. Moreover, offsides needs to looked at as well. Maybe it should be changed completely. It seems silly the NHL has trouble with scoring goals, yet they’re constantly taking goals away because someone is ever so slightly offsides.

The overturned goal looms large in the game, as the Lightning and Hurricanes are tied at three goals a piece at the end of regulation. With Tampa Bay being so close to a playoff spot, could this overturned goal define their season?
