The Washington Nationals will be without their shortstop Trea Turner for at least the next week, due to injury.

We’re officially a week into the MLB season, and the injury bug has already bitten the Washington Nationals. Trea Turner, shortstop for the Nats, will miss the next 10 days with a hamstring strain.

Turner left Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies in the first inning. After leading off the game with an infield single, the 23-year-old shortstop stole second base and then moved to third on a single. But he pulled into third in pain and was taken out of the game.

The day got worse for the Nationals, who gave up 12 runs in the first inning en route to a 17-3 beating.  The hope was that Turner would be back sometime this week, but the youngster is going to take some additional time to heal up.

It had already been a slow start for last year’s NL Rookie of the Year runner-up, going 2-for-18 with two steals going into Saturday’s game. With his injury, Washington will likely look to Stephen Drew or Wilmer Difo to assume shortstop duties in is absence. Drew started Sunday’s game, although the decision on who will get the daily start will likely be a game-by-game basis.

Turner carried a .342 average a year ago, belting 13 home runs and driving in 40 runs. He’s a dual power/speed threat that is a usual nice fit in the leadoff spot. A hamstring injury of any sort is a problem for someone who relies on their speed on both sides of the ball.

The Nationals will open up the week at home against St. Louis, and will look to break past their 3-3 start to this season. And no doubt count the days until Trea Turner is back on the field.
