Sadly, this Friday, The CW will be airing a repeat of The Originals. But it is only a week break, the will return right on time for the start of May Sweeps.

After five fast paced episodes, The Originals is taking a small break. Specifically, there will be no new episode on Friday, but the show will return the next week. The week off should give fans some time to process all that has happened in the season so far, because a lot has already taken place.

When season 4 opened, Hayley was on the brink of waking up the Mikaelsons after five years, Klaus was being held hostage by Marcel who was in full control of New Orleans.

Now, two of the Mikaelsons, Rebekah and Kol, are off traveling the world. Hope has been possessed by an ancient spirit and cured. Said spirit, The Hollow, also briefly took control of Marcel and Klaus. Freya managed to save them, and now Marcel is Klaus’ prisoner.

That is a lot of ground to cover so early in the season, and there are still many more mysteries to unravel. Chief among them: what The Hollow actually is still needs to be answered, and it looks like that may happen as soon as the next episode. Vincent clearly knows a lot more about this. And with Marcel out of the picture (for now), he may have to actually work with the Mikaelsons.

Once the identity of The Hollow is revealed, The Originals will also need to explore how it is connected to Hayley’s parents. Her parents have been mentioned a few times throughout the series. But their connection to The Hollow probably means that their backstory will finally get more attention.

It is also an interesting path for the show to take in terms of explaining why The Hollow is after Hope. The simple answer is that she is the only witch/werewolf/vampire in the world. But the more interesting route is that Hope is in danger because of Hayley’s family.

A lot of the focus on keeping Hope safe in past seasons has been about protecting Hope from Mikaelson family enemies. The Originals could have used that same plot point this season, but instead they appear to be leaning toward Hayley’s family being responsible for Hope almost dying this time around.

Another thing to look forward to before the end of season 4 will be Alaric’s (Matt Davis) arrival in New Orleans. He appears to be the lone crossover between The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. It is still unknown what will bring Alaric to town. But given what happened in the series finale of The Vampire Diaries, it must involve him telling Klaus about the school for supernatural children he started with Caroline.
