Borussia Dortmund enter the final week of the Bundesliga tied for third with Hoffenheim. Third place in the Bundesliga gains automatic qualification into the Champions League group stage next season. The team who finishes in fourth place will have to go through Champions League qualification stage.
Dortmund had a chance to wrap up third place with a win but drew with Augsburg. Augsburg opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Alfred Finnbogason tapped in the rebound. Four minutes later, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang redirected a shot passed Augsburg keeper Andreas Luthe. The goal was Aubameyang’s 29th of the season, one behind former teammate Robert Lewandowski for the Bundesliga scoring title.
Werder hosted Hoffenheim in the penultimate game of the season. Bremen caught fire in the second half of the season and sit one point behind seventh place Koln and three points behind sixth place Freiburg. If Dortmund win the league cup next Saturday, seven Bundesliga teams will qualify for Europe next season.
Bremen won nine and drew two games between Feb. 18 and the end of April to climb from the relegation zone to eighth in the Bundesliga. Over Werder’s 11 game unbeaten run, striker Max Kruse scored 10 goals and added five assists.
However, Bremen’s run came to an end two weeks ago losing a vital game to Koln 4-3. Last week Werder were dominated by Hoffenheim. The Bremen defense was awful allowing five goals in the first 51 minutes. Werder made the match appear closer than it was with three goals in the last half hour of the game.
