French Open 2017: Women’s results – Second round

Thursday’s action on the women’s side of the French Open bracket saw some very close matches. Let’s recap all the action from Day 5.

The French Open is quickly starting to come to an end. It feels like only yesterday the matches began. But Thursday is already the fifth day and the second round is nearly complete. The biggest upset of the day came when Madison Keys lost to Petra Matric despite Keys winning the first set. Ranked 15th, she lost four of the last 16 games after taking the first set.

Another upset came when Veronica Cepde Royg topped the 16th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets. Alize Cornet and Magda Linette completed the day of upsets by beating 20th seed Barbora Strycova and 29th seed Ana Konjuh respectively.

Second seed Karolina Pliskova, the top remaining seed in the tournament, got a scare from Ekaterina Alexandrova after she won the second set. However, the former beat the latter in the deciding third set 6-3. Third seed Simona Halep had no issues with Tatjana Maria, beating her in straight sets.

The field is starting to shape up after the fifth day. 10th seed Venus Williams is the biggest draw for Friday’s action as she faces Elise Mertens. Svetlana Kuznetsova is coming off a less than ideal performance on Wednesday. As the eighth seed, she’ll face Oceane Dodin on Friday.
