By John Buhler
The fourth round of the women’s singles tournament at the 2017 French Open has concluded. Let’s take a look to see who advanced to the quarterfinals.
In a tournament that has been chock full of upsets, we saw a nice day of chalk on clay in the women’s singles part of the 2017 French Open at Stade Roland Garros in Paris. Four women have advanced to the event’s quarterfinals and will play on Wednesday.
Advancing to the quarterfinals are No. 2 Karolina Pliskova, No. 3 Simona Halep, No. 5 Elina Svitolina and No. 28 Caroline Garcia. Pliskova defeated Veronica Cepede Royg in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals. There she will meet Garcia, how knocked off Alize Cornet in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
The other quarterfinals pairing for Wednesday will feature No. 3 Halep and No. 5 Svitolina. Halep has been very impressive in her fourth matches thus far at Roland Garros. She advanced of No. 21 Carla Suarez Navarro in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Svitolina’s Monday on clay wasn’t as easy as Halep’s, but reached the same result of fourth round advancement. She needed three sets to defeat Petra Martic, but did so, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

The women’s singles tournament at the 2017 French Open has been a strange one. Top-seeded Angelique Kerber fell on the first day. Only three of the tournament’s top-eight seeds have reached the event’s quarterfinals. With No. 4 Garbine Muguruza unable to stick around into the tournament’s second week, there will be a new winner on clay for the women this weekend. Halep might be the favorite now, but it’s anyone’s guess about what could happen the rest of the way.
