Things will look different when NBC‘s The Night Shift season 4 begins on Thursday. The midseason medical drama welcomes a new recurring character, a nurse named Cain Diaz played by Mark Consuelos (Pitch). His arrival coincides with the absence of main character Topher Zia, as actor Ken Leung decided not to return to the series between seasons.

Season 4, episode 1 is called “Recoil,” and despite the cast changes, The Night Shift packs an awful lot into the season premiere. Jordan (Jill Flint) jumps out of a helicopter while her ex-boyfriend T.C. (Eoin Macken) remains in Syria looking for Syd (recurring guest star Jennifer Beals, who’s now also moved on to star in another NBC drama, Taken). The Night Shift is keeping it busy in “Recoil.”

"Jordan and Drew perform a daring rescue by jumping from a chopper. Landing at the nearest VA hospital, Jordan sparks a plan to appease Julian and reunite her night shift team.Back at the hospital, Paul deals with the repercussions of standing up to his father while Scott dives headlong into his professional life. Kenny butts heads with Cain, a traveling nurse with a mysterious past. Shannon indoctrinates Cain as they work in San Antonio Memorial’s understaffed and overworked ER.Meanwhile, TC is held captive in Syria. In order to find Syd, TC must treat his captor instead of returning to the safety of an air base with a civilian volunteer, Amira."
