NFL roundup: DeAngelo Williams plans to play in 2017

After a failed try at professional wrestling, running back DeAngelo Williams is ready to return to the NFL for the 2017 season.

During the 2016 NFL season, DeAngelo Williams did a nice job filling in for Le’Veon Bell for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Recently, Williams made his professional debut, but his career in the sport is likely over after an embarrassing face plant. Williams told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that he “definitely will be playing football” in 2017, and at 34 years old, likely has a year or two of solid ball left in him.

The Dallas Cowboys are supposed to be America’s Team, but their 4th of July had a sour note to it in 2017. Linebacker Damien Wilson was arrested on two felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The second-year player was released on a $20,000 bond, and while he was playing with the first team during voluntary workouts, it will be interesting to see what the league does as far as punishment.

Staying with the Cowboys, it looks like Dak Prescott might have some explaining to do. The second-year quarterback, who was the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2016, is being accused of having a machine sign his autographs. In fact, Beckett Grading Services refused to verify the autograph, and if this story is true, it is certainly one of the weirder things that  has happened this offseason.

Another quarterback who was in the news on the Fourth of July was former San Francisco 49ers signal-caller Colin Kaepernick. Rumored to be blackballed from the NFL, Kaepernick made a trip to Ghanda to find “personal independence,” calling the country “home.” The 29-year-old is certainly good enough to play in the NFL, but his image took a hit when he refused to stand for the National Anthem in 2016, and some teams are likely shying away from him because of it.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame will induct its 2017 class in August, and the presenters for the event were released on Wednesday. Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will be presented by his wife, Gene, as will Kurt Warner by his wife Brenda. Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis will be presented by his agent, Neil Schwartz, as the three enter the Hall with Morten Andersen, Kenny Easley and Jason Taylor.
