Konnan’s sour relationship with WWE halts the potential return of Rey Mysterio.

Those hoping that WWE would be bringing back former world champion Rey Mysterio are going to be disappointed.

According to a report by Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Vince McMahon is balking on a potential return due to his issues with Mysterio’s representation, namely former WCW star Konnan.

Konnan, Mysterio’s longtime friend and someone he credits as helping him get into the business, and McMahon haven’t seen eye-to-eye since the early ’90s. McMahon invested a lot of money and creative effort into the Max Moon gimmick for Konnan, who walked out on the company due to his rising fame in Mexico.

Konnan showed up to a recent WWE event as a guest of Chris Jericho, but did nothing to improve his standing with the company.

Since last year’s brand split and rumors of WWE reaching out to former talent to add depth and star power to each roster, Mysterio’s name has popped up in connection with WWE. The famed luchador left the company in Feb. 2015 after a 13-year run.

Mysterio’s name has become even more prevalent in WWE circles over the last few months as they continue to search for a Mexican star. The recent return of the Hardy Boyz, and the reaction they got at WrestleMania, likely helped Mysterio’s cause and leverage.

With WWE not being an option at the moment, the 42-year-old masked superstar will likely accept a big financial offer from Jeff Jarrett’s Global Force Wrestling. Given that Konnan currently works for the company as the manager of the Latin American Xchange as their desperate need for a reliable foreign star in the wake of Alberto El Patron’s issues, Mysterio makes a lot of sense for GFW.

As long as GFW allows Mysterio to take bookings outside of the company without interfering, we should see a deal between the two sides worked out sooner rather than later.
